A Wednesday Afternoon on East Boulevard

Many local poets and poetry lovers
gathered on the grounds of an elite private college
to commemorate the centenary of Hart Crane's birth
Those reading his poems in celebration were sometimes drowned out
by the roar of the diesel engines of commerce;
were ignored by the passing pedestrians;
were mocked by the proximity of a library wing
that commemorated corporate greed
yet provided no shade from the sweltering summer sun
Atop inscriptions from his poems the statue of the poet stood,
hat in hand like a hobo in a Thirties Hollywood movie,
gazing across the street at the Art Museum's lagoon,
dreaming of another watery grave
