EXIGENT PERSISTENCE
The doppler perspective of a Sunday drive--
trees twist and reach, full
or warped--
Thoughts are little leaves:
wronged, disposed, expended.
The season an indifferent,
absorbent continuum.
Ever aware of bowels and stomach,
the binding of body in clothes.
Turn the radio off, see billions
of ephemeral shadows.
Imagine the shushed privacy of
an interior wood.
WALKING
The humdrum of insect buzz
padded footfalls in a wood
a sunbeam on a bird wing
and I am a walker in the world
where one minute is a step
to the next minute
my legs are sufficient for this
(how smart the animals
their miniature economies
and furry industriousness)
I have an apple in my pack
Can't I be married to the earth?
My weekend hours are the earth.
Couldn't it be so easy to
lie in a swamp or be
buried in the earth?
FOR MY FRIEND
My friend, my absolute achiever: here is a bust,
a sundial. Beauty in idea, the curl of skin above a lip, the fact
of eyelashes. The sure red lines of a Da Vinci drawing. Sunrise
or an aurora, a nipple, the pubic smile of a fold of skin. Fact
tangible, Euclidean nearness, the perception of a flat earth, the
movie theater of the eye or the wavelengths coming into the eye.
Fact here, aching, mirror-like, drinking the sea, plenty, awash,
overflow, obscured by virtue of its tepidity, not other. An accomplished
life. Beauty for you and yours, and blessings too.
