TRAVELING TANKAS

Chicago

El platform wind-chill
Fashion thrown to the third rail
Chicago winter
Begs angels to pull halos
Down over their ears for warmth

Neon flashing by
Nails by Lucy – Bail Bondsman
Dance class of toddlers
Glows behind drapeless windows
Pirouette to train clatter

Zagreb

The streets of Zagreb’s
Intestinal schematic
Swallow our rental car
As if a five Kuna coin
Picked up by curious child

Guessing at our route
We climb hills, twist through keyholes
Pray out loud for signs
But as any mother learns
Eventually, we’ll pass.

TOURISTS

We ate goat cheese
and drank wine
we traveled
in fables
we saw the canals
of Venice and Mars
we traveled
story-land
we tasted
the oranges
Spanish moonlight
filigreed our breasts
we traveled
with refugees
on routes of war
we ate goat cheese
and drank wine
intoxicated
we thought
all thought
irrational
we died
thousands of times
and traveled
through walls
of castles
that rose in the mist
and ate goat cheese
and drank wine
on the green hills
of a kiss.
