No Rain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The desert welcomes this water sign,
\ndrinking her into the scenery, it is easy
\nfor a Scorpio to adapt to the sun
\nas she walks with her girlfriends and what
\nmight be Apache spirit guides
\nleading her to pottery shards: one white
\nwith black stripes and one reddish-brown
\nwith a black figure holding a spear ready.<\/p>\n

We hunt for sacred treasures like this
\nthrough paths of scattered multicolored
\nvolcanic rocks, broken sticks, Prickly Pears,
\nSage brush and Mexican Golden Poppies
\non Starlight Dr., soaking in the silent
\nflat landscape after riding stubborn horses
\nin the afternoon heat. Tomorrow we will
\nclimb a mountain and discover
\npetroglyphs and grinding rocks there.<\/p>\n

Tonight we will meet with Orion,
\nAndromeda, and Miss Cassiopeia back
\nat the ranch house, wrap ourselves up and sit
\nin the cool night air, then maybe warm ourselves
\nwith Tequila mixed with Sprite Zero
\n(again, per Herb\u2019s suggestion), and count
\nthe shooting stars as we wait for the Milky Way
\nto guide Sonserai – the morning sun – above
\nthe Chiricahua mountains.<\/p>\n

rain birds<\/strong><\/p>\n
bright yellow bellies and wings as black as ohio coal,
\nwith a hint of orange on the underside,
\nand split tails painted
\nlandlord white.<\/p>\n
she flies in repetitive arcs, figure eights and spirals,
\nthe outside track bringing her ever closer
\nto my river view window,
\nand her colors flash
\nand flash again
\nas she turns.<\/p>\n
he joins her in this amazing dance,
\nsometimes following exactly,
\nother times darting out over the rushing water
\nand then returning
\nin a straight, fast, line to her side.<\/p>\n
his yellow belly matches hers without exception,
\nalthough his wings show more orange
\nas he climbs.<\/p>\n
the daily gulls dutifully took their places
\nunder the massive steel of the detroit-superior bridge
\nas soon as the rains began,<\/p>\n
a single robin sits stoically upon the chain link fence,
\nand hidden sparrows chirp nervously
\nas they vie for dry spots
\namong the trees.<\/p>\n
this pair, however, take delight in the rain,
\nswirling playful and grateful,<\/p>\n
glorious in their flashing colors,
\nintersecting circles,
\nability to embrace the day.<\/p>\n
