prayer

the sun comes rolling heat
& light into my skin, my eyes –
I submit, this last
of summer, sweat & stink body
sacrifice the way
leaves will start dropping
a month from now
their life’s liquid chlorophyll lunch
drying to a waxy brightness
stiff curl & crunch
into autumn —
autumn, a poem prayer for autumn
its hallowed weenie brat
spidermen & ghouls,
these few city houses playing
host to adults & children alike
holding bags out for candy
offerings, sun & growth
blown away, a chill dumping
of snow, a prayer
to be left safe
from children & their guns.
